Sauna electrical requirements: circuits, costs and the questions to ask an electrician

What circuit each heater size needs, what the run costs in a US metro, when you need a subpanel, and why the electrical quote should come before the sauna.

The electrical quote is the most consequential number in a sauna project, and almost everyone gets it last. Getting it first changes which heater makes sense, sometimes which sauna makes sense, and occasionally whether the project happens at all.

What each heater size needs

The pattern worth noticing: 8 kW and 9 kW usually land on the same 40A breaker. If you are between the two and the circuit is the same, take the 9 kW. It costs a little more up front and nothing extra to install, and undersizing a heater is the more common and more annoying mistake. See heater sizing for the room-volume maths.

What the run actually costs

$800–$2,000 is the honest range for a dedicated 240V circuit to a detached backyard sauna in a US metro. The variables, roughly in order of impact:

Trench length. The dominant cost. Fifteen feet from the panel is a different job from ninety feet across a finished lawn with a patio in the way.

Direct burial versus conduit. Direct-burial cable is cheaper; conduit is more robust and sometimes required. Local code and soil conditions decide.

Panel capacity. This is the one that surprises people. If your existing panel has no spare double-pole slots or insufficient headroom, you need a subpanel: add $600–$1,500. Check this before anything else — take a photo of your open panel and send it to the electrician when you request a quote.

Obstacles. Concrete, mature roots, existing utilities, hard rock. Each of these can add hundreds.

Permit and inspection. Typically $100–$400.

The cold plunge circuit

Much simpler, still not optional.

A chiller wants a dedicated 120V 20A GFCI circuit, typically $250–$600 to add.

  • Dedicated matters because sharing with a garage freezer or shop outlets means a tripped breaker on Friday goes unnoticed until your plunge is sitting at 62°F on Sunday.
  • GFCI matters because it is water and refrigeration together. This is code and it is not the place to economise.

Ventilation, briefly

Traditional saunas need air exchange — typically an inlet low near the heater and an outlet high on the opposite wall, adjustable. This is not electrical work but it is part of the same install conversation, and a room with poor air exchange feels stale and heats unevenly no matter how good the heater is.

Indoor infrared cabins produce no steam, which is precisely why they are the sensible choice for a finished interior room.

Questions to ask the electrician

Bring these to the quote and you will get a far more accurate number:

  1. “Does my panel have capacity for a 40A double-pole breaker, or do I need a subpanel?” — the single biggest cost fork.
  2. “Direct burial or conduit for this run, and what does code require here?”
  3. “What is the trench length you are quoting, and what happens if we hit rock or roots?”
  4. “Is the permit and inspection included in this figure, or separate?”
  5. “What conductor gauge for this length — and is voltage drop accounted for?” Long runs sometimes need a size up, which changes material cost.
  6. “Can you quote both a 40A and a 50A circuit?” Sometimes the incremental cost of future-proofing to 50A is small, and it leaves room for a bigger heater later.

Get the quote before you order

The sequence that saves money:

  1. Electrical quote first. Photo of your panel, rough distance, target amperage.
  2. If it comes back under about $1,200 → electric heat is on the table.
  3. If it comes back over that → wood-fired outdoors, or infrared indoors on a 120V circuit.
  4. Then choose the heater to match the circuit you are actually getting.
  5. Then the sauna to match the heater.

Doing it in the reverse order — which is the fun order, because the sauna is the exciting part — is how people end up owning a 9 kW heater and a panel that cannot feed it.

Questions buyers actually ask

What size breaker does a sauna heater need?

Roughly: 6 kW draws about 25A and needs a 30A breaker; 8 kW draws about 33A and needs 40A; 9 kW draws about 37.5A and needs 40A; 10.5 kW draws about 44A and needs 50A. Always follow the manufacturer's nameplate and local code — breaker and conductor sizing depend on run length, ambient temperature and installation method.

How much does it cost to wire a sauna?

Typically $800–$2,000 for a dedicated 240V circuit to a detached backyard structure in a US metro, driven mainly by trench length, conduit versus direct burial, and panel capacity. An indoor sauna on an existing panel in the same room can be considerably less. If your panel is full, add $600–$1,500 for a subpanel.

Can a sauna run on a normal outlet?

Traditional saunas, no — they need a dedicated 240V circuit. Some infrared cabins do run on 120V, but on a dedicated 20A circuit rather than a shared one. Portable infrared systems genuinely run on any standard outlet.

Do I need a permit for sauna wiring?

Almost always, and it is the part not to skip. The permit and inspection are what protect you with your insurer and at resale. The sauna structure itself often falls under a shed exemption; the electrical work rarely does.
