About

Why this site exists

Home recovery equipment is a category where a $9,000 purchase gets made on the strength of a podcast mention and a product page. We thought the numbers deserved somewhere to live.

The gap

Search a phrase like "best outdoor sauna" and page one is mostly brands ranking their own collections, a Reddit thread, and a magazine listicle assembled from press releases. There is no equivalent of what Wirecutter did for mattresses or what a handful of obsessive single-topic sites did for pool robots and espresso machines.

Meanwhile the purchase itself is genuinely hard. A sauna is a wood structure, a heating appliance and an electrical project at once. A cold plunge is a refrigeration problem wearing a barrel. A red light panel is a photometry question that almost nobody in the market can answer correctly. These are exactly the decisions where measurement beats opinion.

What we do

We maintain a specified, priced database of the equipment in this category, publish buying guides organised around the decisions rather than the products, and measure what we can measure. Where our data comes from manufacturers, we attribute it. Where it comes from our own bench, we describe the instrument and the conditions.

What we will not do

  • Sell placement, ranking or scores. Ever.
  • Let a brand see a review before it publishes.
  • Make health claims the evidence does not support, in either direction.
  • Publish a price without a date on it — this category discounts constantly and a stale price is a lie with a long tail.

Corrections

If a figure here is wrong, we want to fix it faster than you can screenshot it. Email hello@recoveryroomlab.com and include the page. Corrections are made in place with the update date changed.

A necessary disclaimer

Nothing on this site is medical advice. Heat, cold and light exposure carry real physiological risks, and the risk profile is very different if you are pregnant, have a cardiovascular condition, or are on medication that affects thermoregulation. Talk to a clinician who knows your history before starting any of this.
