Cold plunge chiller sizing: how much horsepower you actually need
1/4, 1/3, 1/2 or 1 HP — sized against gallons, ambient temperature and insulation quality. Most buyers overspend on horsepower and underspend on the lid.

Chiller horsepower is the most over-bought spec in home recovery. The reason is a misunderstanding about what the chiller spends its time doing.
Two different jobs
Pull-down is cooling the water from tap temperature to your target the first time. It is slow, it is energy-intensive, and horsepower helps a lot.
Hold is replacing the heat that leaks in through the walls, the lid and the surface. It is a much smaller load, it runs forever, and horsepower barely matters — insulation and lid seal do almost all the work.
Most people size their chiller for pull-down, then discover that pull-down happens once and hold happens every day for ten years.
The sizing table

The default answer for most US homes is 1/3 HP. It handles a 130-gallon barrel in a garage through summer, pulls down overnight, and does not sound like a compressor room.
The three variables that change the answer
Gallons. Obvious, and the one people already account for. A 130-gallon barrel is 30% more thermal mass than a 100-gallon tub.
Ambient temperature. Badly underestimated. A chiller in a 95°F August garage is fighting a 50°F temperature differential; the same chiller in a 60°F basement is fighting 15°F. That is more than three times the load. If your plunge lives in an uninsulated garage in a hot climate, size up one step.
Insulation and lid. A rigid insulated lid that actually seals can halve your hold-mode energy use. An open or loose-fitting lid means the chiller fights evaporative loss continuously, which is the single largest heat gain path in an uncovered tub.
Integrated or separate
Integrated (chiller built into the tub, like the Plunge All-In Gen 2): tidier, quieter, no hoses, no separate footprint. Fails as one unit — when the refrigeration goes, the appliance goes.
Separate (external chiller plumbed to a tub, like the Redwood Alaskan All-In-One): visibly less tidy, needs a spot for the box and the hoses. But the chiller is the part that fails, and being able to replace a $900 chiller instead of a $8,490 appliance is a structural advantage.
Our view: separate systems age better. Integrated systems are nicer for the first three years.
Electrical
A chiller needs a dedicated 120V 20A GFCI circuit. Two words matter there:
- Dedicated — sharing with a garage freezer or shop outlets is how people find their plunge sitting at 62°F because a breaker tripped on Friday and nobody noticed until Sunday.
- GFCI — water and refrigeration. This is not optional and it is code.

Ozone, UV and filtration
Filtration determines how often you drain and refill, which is the actual maintenance burden of owning a plunge.
- No filtration: drain and refill roughly weekly with regular use. Free, tedious.
- Filter only: extends to two or three weeks.
- Filter + ozone: the All-In Gen 2 circulates the entire volume every 15 minutes with ozone sanitation. Realistically months between changes.
Ozone is a genuine convenience upgrade rather than a health feature. Price it as “how much is not draining a 130-gallon tub every week worth to me”.
The chest freezer question
A chest-freezer conversion is the cheapest possible chilled plunge, and the internet is full of them. What the build videos consistently under-emphasise:
- Freezers are not designed to hold water. Interior liners crack; seams leak; the insulation is not sealed against standing moisture.
- Electrical safety around a large metal box full of water needs GFCI protection and careful grounding, not enthusiasm.
- Sanitation is entirely manual — no circulation, no filtration.
- No warranty on any of it, and a homeowner’s insurance conversation you may not want to have.
It works. It costs $300–$600. We are not going to tell you it is a good idea, but we are also not going to pretend people do not do it successfully.

Questions buyers actually ask
What size chiller do I need for a cold plunge?
For a well-insulated 100-gallon tub in a cool space, 1/4 HP holds temperature adequately. For 100–130 gallons in most US climates year-round, 1/3 HP is the safe default. Hot climates, thin insulation or fast pull-down requirements push you to 1/2 HP. 1 HP is commercial territory and is overkill and noisy for single-user home use.
How long does a chiller take to cool a plunge?
Initial pull-down from tap temperature (around 65–70°F) to 45°F typically takes 8–24 hours depending on horsepower, gallons and ambient temperature. This is a one-time cost — after that the chiller only replaces heat leaking in, which is where insulation and lid seal matter far more than horsepower.
Can I use an aquarium chiller for a cold plunge?
Mechanically yes, and many budget setups do. The caveats are real: aquarium chillers are rated for continuous mild cooling rather than deep pull-down, warranties often exclude non-aquarium use, and titanium coil compatibility with sanitised water needs checking. It works, it is cheaper, and it fails sooner.
