Mouth tape: what it is, the best tape for sleeping, and how to use it safely

The tape that ranks for mouth taping on Amazon is mostly wound-care tape, and some of it says on its own listing not to use it for anything else. What mouth tape is, what we would use if you tape at all, and how to do it without sealing your mouth shut.

Short answer

Mouth tape is skin-safe adhesive worn over the lips at night to keep the mouth closed. No tape we checked on Amazon on 15 October 2026 is labelled for the mouth. If you try it, the conservative choice is low-tack paper tape as a small vertical strip, never a full seal, after a sleep assessment if you snore.

Search Amazon for mouth tape for sleeping and you get a page of tape. Open the listings and most of it turns out to be tape made for something else. Two of the purpose-styled products ranking in those results tell you, on their own listings, not to use them for anything except dressings. That is the most useful thing we found while researching this page, and it decides how we pick.

So this is a short buying guide with a long safety section, in that order of importance. It sits in our recovery tools section.

What is mouth tape?

A strip or patch of adhesive, worn during sleep, that holds the lips together so you breathe through your nose. It comes in three shapes, and the shape matters more than the brand:

  • Vertical strip. A short piece over the middle of closed lips, top lip to chin. The corners of the mouth stay free, so you can still part your lips and breathe or cough past it.
  • Ring. Adhesive that surrounds the lips with an opening in the middle, which pulls the lips together without covering them.
  • Full patch. A wider piece over the whole mouth, sometimes with a vent. This is the version that comes closest to sealing the mouth shut.

It is sold two ways: as branded strips cut and packaged for the job, and as ordinary medical tape, the kind used to hold gauze on a wound, which people cut to length themselves. The second is what the cheapest search results are.

What is mouth tape used for?

To stop breathing through the mouth while asleep. People buy it hoping for less snoring, less dry mouth on waking and better sleep, and some CPAP users use it to stop air leaking out of the mouth on a nasal mask.

What it has been shown to do is narrower. In two small studies without control groups, adults with mild sleep apnea who breathed through the mouth snored less and had fewer breathing events while taped (Lee 2022, n=20; Huang 2015, n=30). In a 2023 study of 71 people across all apnea severities, oxygen desaturation did not improve in half of them. No study we found shows better sleep in people without a breathing problem. Mouth-leak on CPAP is a real clinical issue, but it belongs with whoever manages your machine, and the CPAP section of our evidence page covers it.

What we found on Amazon: dressing tape, sold for the mouth

On 15 October 2026 we opened the listings that rank in Amazon’s results for mouth tape for sleeping. Two stood out, because they are the ones styled most like a purpose-made mouth strip: VIORY Gentle Tape (30 pack) and PATCH4U Premium Tape (30 pack), both from the same seller, Magic FP. Both listings carry the same sentence: the tape “should be used for securing dressings in place, and should not be used for any other purpose.”

We are not linking either, and we would not use either over a mouth: when a product’s own listing rules out every use but one, we take it at its word. It is also not an outlier. The two Nexcare tapes we recommend below are sold as medical tapes too, and the paper one’s listing says it secures gauze for dressing wounds. None of the tapes we checked on Amazon is labelled by its maker for use over the mouth. Whatever you buy there, you are using a tape for something its manufacturer does not market it for.

That shapes the picks. If the label is not going to tell you a tape is suited to your lips, the property to choose on is the one that limits the downside: how easily it comes off.

Best mouth tape for sleeping

Our pick, and the answer to “what is the best mouth tape” if you are going to tape at all, is the lowest-tack tape we could find from a major medical brand, used as a small vertical strip. The stronger silicone tape is the alternative for people whose skin reacts to paper tape, and it comes with a caveat attached.

Our pick · If you tape at all Amazon

Nexcare Gentle Paper Tape, 1 in x 10 yd, 2 rolls

A breathable paper medical tape that the listing says is known in hospitals as 3M Micropore Surgical Tape, with a gentle adhesive that can be removed with minimal discomfort. The spec that matters is the low tack: it is the easiest of the two to peel off, and the listing says it tears easily in both directions, so cutting a short strip by hand is easy. The listing also states it is dermatologist-tested, hypoallergenic and not made with natural rubber latex. It is sold for holding gauze on wounds, not for lips.

Our pick · Skin that reacts to paper tape Amazon

Nexcare Strong Yet Pain Free Tape, sensitive skin, 1 in x 4 yd

A silicone-adhesive tape that the listing says is known in hospitals as 3M Micropore S, removes painlessly and can be repositioned on the skin. The listing states it holds for up to 48 hours, which is exactly why we rank it second over a mouth: that hold is designed for dressings, not for something you may need off in a hurry. Its point is skin comfort and the ability to lift and reseat it. One of the two positive studies, Lee 2022, used “3M silicone hypoallergenic tape”, but the paper gives no product number, so we cannot say it was this one.

How to use mouth tape safely

If you have read the evidence and still want to try it, this is the conservative way to do it.

  1. Get the snoring explained first. If you snore loudly, wake unrefreshed, or someone has seen you stop breathing, get a sleep assessment before you tape. This is the step people skip and the one that matters most.
  2. Check your nose. Close your mouth and breathe through your nose for a couple of minutes. If you cannot do that comfortably while awake, do not tape tonight. Fix the nose first; a nasal strip is the low-risk tool.
  3. Vertical strip, not a seal. Cut about two inches of tape, fold a small tab over at one end so you can find it in the dark, and place it vertically over the centre of closed lips. The corners stay open. Never tape across the whole mouth.
  4. Test it awake. Wear it for 20 to 30 minutes while reading. If you feel short of breath, anxious or keep wanting to pull it off, that is the answer.
  5. Prepare the skin. Clean, dry lips and skin hold tape more predictably; lip balm under the tape stops it sticking, so put it on afterwards on the uncovered parts, or not at all. A beard or stubble makes any tape less reliable.
  6. Skip the bad nights. Not when congested or ill, not after alcohol, sleeping pills or anything sedating, not if you feel nauseous, and never on a child.
  7. Take it off gently. Peel slowly, low and back, supporting the skin. If it pulls, wet it first. Stop if your lips or skin become red or sore.

Branded mouth strips: SomniFix, Hostage Tape, Myotape, Dream Recovery

Most “best mouth tape” lists are rankings of these four. We have not tried any of them and have not checked their Amazon listings for this page, so we are not ranking them and not linking them. What we can report is what each says about its own design, from the brands’ websites read on 15 October 2026, because design is the thing that decides how close a strip comes to sealing the mouth.

  • Myotape says its tape has a hole that lets it “surround, not cover” the mouth, so the mouth is never fully sealed. That is the ring shape above, and on design alone it is the most conservative of the four. Its site also lists a kids’ size; we would not tape a child’s mouth without a pediatrician’s advice.
  • SomniFix describes a patented breathing vent made of woven mesh, through which air passes “only with effort”, and says the strip keeps the lips sealed. That is a full patch with a restricted vent.
  • Hostage Tape describes a fabric strip worn over the lips. Its own site says not to use mouth tape when nasal breathing is obstructed or you are congested, and that it should not replace prescribed sleep-apnea treatment, which is more caution than most listings offer.
  • Dream Recovery is sold, according to retailer listings we read, in a full lip-covering size and a smaller vertical strip. We did not check the brand’s own site.

The safety ranking follows the shape: a ring or a small vertical strip leaves an exit, a full patch narrows or closes it. Whichever you choose, everything in the section above still applies.

What we have not measured

We have not tested any tape on this page, on skin or on a bench. Every spec in the table is from the Amazon listing as it read on 15 October 2026, and the 48-hour hold is Nexcare’s figure, not ours. The descriptions of the four branded strips are each brand’s own account of its design.

The test that would settle the ranking is peel force, because removability is the property we pick on. We would cut 1-inch by 4-inch strips of each tape, apply them to a stainless steel test panel and, separately, to the inner forearm with a fixed 10-second press, and pull each off at 180 degrees with a digital force gauge at a steady rate, logging peak and average force. Three strips per tape on the panel, three on skin. Forearm skin is not lip skin, skin results vary from person to person, and n=3 on one tester is a ranking, not a specification. It would still turn “gentle” and “strong” into numbers, which no listing we read does. Our how we test page says the same about every figure on the site.

What we would actually do

Get the snoring explained, fix the nose, and only then decide whether tape has anything left to do. If it does, Nexcare Gentle Paper Tape as a short vertical strip, tested while awake, on nights you are well and sober. For the case for and against taping at all, read does mouth taping work.

Questions buyers actually ask

What is mouth tape?

A strip or patch of skin-safe adhesive worn over or around the lips during sleep to keep the mouth closed, so you breathe through your nose. It is sold two ways: purpose-made strips from brands such as SomniFix, Hostage Tape, Myotape and Dream Recovery, and ordinary medical tape that people cut to size.

What is mouth tape used for?

Mostly to stop mouth-breathing at night, with the hope of less snoring, less dry mouth and better sleep. The evidence for those hopes is thin: a 2025 systematic review found 10 small studies, 213 people, all rated poor quality, with benefits shown only in people with mild sleep apnea who breathed through the mouth.

What is the best mouth tape for sleeping?

The one that comes off most easily, used as a small vertical strip rather than a full seal. Of what we checked on Amazon on 15 October 2026, that is Nexcare Gentle Paper Tape, the consumer version of 3M Micropore. None of the tapes we checked is labelled for use over the mouth, so you are using a wound-care tape for a purpose its maker does not market it for.

Can you use medical tape as mouth tape?

People do, and one of the two small studies that found a benefit used a 3M silicone medical tape. But medical tape is labelled for securing dressings, not for the mouth, and some tapes ranking for mouth taping on Amazon say on their listings that they should not be used for any other purpose. If you use it, pick a low-tack tape and never seal the mouth fully.

How do you use mouth tape safely?

Get assessed for sleep apnea first if you snore. Use a short vertical strip over the centre of closed lips that leaves the corners free, test it for half an hour while awake, and make sure you can peel it off in one movement. Skip it when your nose is blocked, after alcohol or sedatives, if you feel nauseous, and never use it on a child.
