Recovery room builds: the circuit, the pad and the three budgets that actually work

The unglamorous part nobody sells you — 240V circuits, concrete pads, drainage, floor loading and permits — plus three itemized builds at $3K, $8K and $20K.

Every sauna brand sells you a room. Every plunge brand sells you a tub. Nobody sells you the 240V circuit, the compacted gravel bed, the GFCI outlet, the drainage, or the afternoon with an inspector — which is exactly where first-time buyers lose control of the budget.

A rough rule from pricing dozens of real builds: plan for the site and electrical work to add 20 to 35 percent on top of the equipment for a detached backyard sauna, and close to nothing for a garage infrared cabin on an existing 20A circuit. That spread is the single biggest variable in what a recovery room costs, and it is decided before you have chosen a brand.

The decisions this section settles

Garage or backyard?
A garage deletes the pad, the permit conversation and most of the trenching. It costs you ventilation planning, floor loading and the parking space.
What electrical do you actually need?
A traditional sauna needs a dedicated 240V circuit, typically 40A for an 8–9 kW heater. A plunge chiller needs a dedicated 120V 20A GFCI circuit. A red light panel plugs into anything.
Pad or no pad?
Barrel saunas sit on cradles that concentrate load on two lines, so a compacted gravel bed or concrete pad is not optional. Cabins want a full slab or a properly built deck.
Can the floor take a plunge?
Water weighs 8.34 lb per gallon. A 130-gallon tub plus water plus a person is well over 1,400 lb. Slab is fine. Framed floors need checking.
Do you need a permit?
The sauna structure often does not, being under the shed threshold in many jurisdictions. The electrical work almost always does, and the inspection is what protects you at resale.
What order do you buy in?
Electrical quote first, then heater, then room, then cold, then light. Buying the room first is how people end up with an 8 kW heater and a panel that cannot feed it.
