The most consequential misunderstanding in the home sauna market is that infrared is a cheaper version of traditional. It is not. It is a different appliance that happens to share a cabinet shape and a category name.

The electrical argument
This is where infrared wins outright for a lot of buyers, and it is worth being blunt about the numbers.
A traditional 8 kW heater needs a dedicated 240V 40A circuit. To a detached backyard structure, that is typically $800–$2,000 installed, plus a permit, plus possibly a subpanel if yours is full.
Several infrared cabins run on a standard 120V dedicated 20A circuit — the kind a spare bedroom may already have, or that an electrician can add for a few hundred dollars. The Sunlighten Signature is explicitly built around this.
If you are in an apartment, a condo, or a house where running 240V means opening walls, that is not a preference, it is the whole decision.

The experience argument
This is where traditional wins, and it is not close for people who care about it.
Löyly — the burst of steam from ladling water onto hot stones — is the entire ritual in Finnish practice. It is what makes the room feel alive rather than merely hot, and it is why stone mass matters more than kilowatt rating in a heater. Infrared cannot produce it. There are no stones, and the emitters are electrical panels you should not splash.
If you grew up with saunas, or you have used a good traditional one and understood what the fuss was about, an infrared cabin will feel like a warm cupboard. Many people who describe infrared as disappointing are not describing a bad product — they are describing the wrong product for what they wanted.
Where infrared is genuinely better
Speed. Twelve minutes to usable versus forty-five. On a weekday evening that is the difference between using it and not.
Tolerance. Some people find 190°F air genuinely unpleasant or unsafe for them. 130°F with deep tissue warming is accessible to people who cannot tolerate traditional heat.
Maintenance and siting. No steam means no moisture management, which is why infrared is the sensible choice for an indoor install in a finished room.

Running cost
Rough arithmetic at a US average residential rate of about 17 cents per kWh:
- Traditional 8 kW: 45 min heat-up plus 45 min session, cycling at maybe 60% duty, ≈ 7.2 kWh ≈ $1.22 per session
- Infrared 2 kW: 12 min warm-up plus 35 min session, near-continuous, ≈ 1.6 kWh ≈ $0.27 per session
Infrared wins per session by a wide margin. But an infrared cabin frequently costs more to buy than a traditional barrel plus heater, so over five years of three-times-weekly use the totals converge and often favour traditional. Rate varies substantially by state — run it with your own number.
How to decide, in three questions
- Do you want to throw water on stones? Yes → traditional. This question alone resolves most cases.
- Can you get 240V to where the sauna will live for under about $1,200? No → infrared, or a wood-fired traditional if it is going outdoors.
- Will more than two people use it at once? Yes → traditional. Infrared cabins seat people facing forward in a small box; traditional saunas are rooms.
If you answered “no, yes, no”, buy infrared and enjoy the twelve-minute warm-up. If you answered “yes” to the first, nothing else on this page matters.
Questions buyers actually ask
Which is better, infrared or traditional?
Neither, because they do different things. Traditional heats the air to 175–195°F and produces steam when you ladle water on hot stones. Infrared warms your tissue directly at 120–150°F with no steam at all. If the ritual you have in mind involves a ladle, infrared will disappoint you at any price. If you want heat that arrives in twelve minutes on a normal circuit, traditional is the wrong tool.
Does infrared make you sweat as much?
Many users report sweating comparably or more in infrared despite the lower air temperature, because the energy is absorbed by tissue rather than heating the air around you. The subjective experience is quite different — infrared feels like sun through a window, traditional feels like weather.
Which costs more to run?
Infrared, per session, usually less: shorter warm-up and lower power draw. Traditional saunas draw 6–10.5 kW for 30–60 minutes of heat-up plus the session. But infrared cabins are often more expensive to buy, so total cost of ownership frequently favours traditional over several years.
Can you put water on an infrared sauna?
No. There are no stones and no heated mass to flash water into steam, and infrared emitters are electrical panels you should not be splashing. If löyly matters to you, this settles the question by itself.
