What a home recovery room actually costs: three builds at $3K, $8K and $20K
Itemized down to the breaker. The equipment is the part you can look up — this is the electrical, the pad, the drainage and the permit that decide whether the project lands on budget.

Every sauna brand sells you a room. Every plunge brand sells you a tub. Nobody sells you the 240V circuit, the compacted gravel bed, the GFCI outlet, the drainage or the afternoon with an inspector — which is exactly where first-time buyers lose control of the budget.
Here are three complete builds, itemized. Not “starting from” pricing: the actual line items, including the ones that arrive as a separate invoice from a licensed electrician.
Build one: the $3,000 garage
The build that skips both expensive problems. No foundation because the slab is already there; no 240V because nothing in it needs 240V.

Electrical work: none. Everything here runs on standard 120V outlets that already exist in a typical garage.
What you give up: no steam, no ritual, no social sauna, and an ongoing ice cost that will annoy you by month eight. What you get is a functioning heat-cold-light protocol for the price of a used bike, in a space you already own, with zero contractor involvement.
This is also the correct build for anyone who is not yet certain they will stick with it. A meaningful share of people who buy $9,000 setups stop using them within a year. Three thousand dollars is a much cheaper way to find out which kind of person you are.
Build two: the $8,000 backyard
The build most people actually want, and the one where the hidden costs bite.

That does not land at $8,000. Which is the point of doing this exercise honestly — so here is the $8,000 version, with the compromises named:

Electrical work: none. Choosing the wood stove over an 8kW electric heater is what makes this build possible at this number. It saves the $800–$2,000 circuit, and it saves it permanently.
Build three: the $20,000 premium
The build where you stop compromising, and where the electrical line item finally appears in full.

Note what the last five thousand dollars buys: not a better sauna, but a finished one. Pad instead of gravel. Circuit instead of firewood. Chiller instead of ice. Drainage instead of a hose across the lawn.
The line items nobody quotes you
240V circuit to a detached structure: $800–$2,000. Driven by trench length, conduit versus direct burial, and panel capacity. If your panel is full, add a subpanel: $600–$1,500 more. Get this quote first — it can change which heater, and even which sauna, makes sense.
120V 20A GFCI circuit for a chiller: $250–$600. Much simpler, but it does need to be dedicated. Sharing a circuit with a garage freezer is how you discover your plunge was off for two days.
Concrete pad: $800–$1,500 for a typical sauna footprint, poured and finished. Compacted gravel: $280–$700, and genuinely adequate for barrel saunas if it is properly compacted and level.
Drainage for a plunge: $200–$600. You are dumping 100–130 gallons periodically. Onto a lawn is fine occasionally; onto the same patch weekly kills it.
Permits: $100–$400 for electrical, typically. The structure often needs none.
Floor loading, in one paragraph
Water weighs 8.34 lb per gallon. A 130-gallon plunge is roughly 1,085 lb of water, plus 250 lb of tub, plus an adult: call it 1,500 lb across about three square feet. A concrete slab on grade handles this without conversation. A wood-framed floor at ground level with a good crawlspace probably handles it but should be checked. Above ground floor, get a structural opinion in writing — this is the one place in the whole project where being wrong is dangerous rather than expensive.
The order to buy in
This is the part that actually saves money:
- Get the electrical quote first. Before the heater, before the sauna. It determines whether electric or wood-fired makes sense, and that is a $1,500 swing.
- Then the heat source, sized to the room volume you intend.
- Then the room, matched to the heater you can actually feed.
- Then cold, which is the easiest thing to add later and the easiest to start cheap.
- Then light, which needs nothing but an outlet and can be bought any time.
Buying in the opposite order — room first, because it is the fun part — is how people end up owning an 8kW heater and a panel that cannot supply it.

Questions buyers actually ask
How much does it cost to run 240V to a backyard sauna?
Typically $800–$2,000 in US metros for a dedicated 40A circuit to a detached structure. The variables that matter are trench length, whether the run is direct-burial or in conduit, and whether your existing panel has spare capacity. If it does not, add $600–$1,500 for a subpanel. Get the electrical quote before you choose a heater.
Do I need a permit for a backyard sauna?
The structure frequently falls under a shed exemption, commonly 100–200 sq ft depending on the jurisdiction. The electrical work almost always requires a permit and inspection. Pulling the electrical permit is what protects you at resale and with your insurer — it is not the part to skip.
Can my garage floor take a cold plunge?
A concrete slab on grade, yes, comfortably. A 130-gallon plunge full of water plus a person is roughly 1,500 lb spread over about three square feet — heavy, but slab handles far more. A wood-framed floor or a second storey needs an actual structural assessment, not a guess.
What is the cheapest way to build a recovery room?
Garage, existing 20A circuit, infrared cabin or sauna blanket, an ice-only plunge tub, and a red light panel. That combination avoids the two expensive line items entirely — the 240V circuit and the foundation — and lands around $3,000 all-in.
