Hyperbaric chamber cost: $60 to $650 a clinic session, $4,095 to $29,999 to own one, and the break-even between them

Medicare paid about $596 for a covered hospital session in 2022, wellness clinics charge $60 to $150 in a soft chamber and $150 to $600 in a hard one, and a home soft chamber lists at $4,095 to $21,995 on 31 October 2026 before the concentrator and the circuit. Here is every number with its source, the installed cost of three home builds, what a session costs in electricity, what insurance will and will not pay, and the session count at which owning beats renting, with the reason the two are not the same dose.

Short answer

A clinic session costs $60 to $150 in a soft 1.3 atmosphere chamber and $150 to $600 in a hard 2.0 atmosphere one, by 2026 price guides; Medicare’s allowed amount for a covered hospital session was about $596 in 2022 from its published rates. A home soft chamber lists at $4,095 to $21,995 on 31 October 2026, plus about $1,575 for a concentrator. At $100 a session, the cheapest cleared home chamber pays back in about 57 sessions.

Three different questions hide inside “hyperbaric chamber cost”: what a session costs at a clinic, what a chamber costs to own, and at what point the second beats the first. This page answers all three with dated figures and, because the home device and the clinic device are not the same thing, says where the arithmetic stops being honest.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy cost per session

The only hard numbers are Medicare’s, because they are published. The rest are cash prices gathered by price-guide websites, and we name them so you can weigh them.

SettingCost per sessionCondition and source
Hospital, Medicare-covered, 2022about $596 allowedFacility code G0277 at $121.80 per 30 minute segment, four segments, plus physician supervision CPT 99183 at $108.66; Gelly and colleagues, Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine, 2024. A 40-session course at that rate is $23,834; the mean course in their data was 27 sessions, $16,088.
Hospital, Medicare-covered, 2025about $658 allowedG0277 at $137.90 per segment for 2025 (CMS final rule, as published by the UHMS) × 4 segments for a 106 to 135 minute session, plus 99183 at about $106. Computed by us from the published rates; what the patient pays depends on the plan’s coinsurance.
Hospital, billed charges$1,000 to $2,500 claimedPrice-guide figure (HBOT Guide, July 2025), no survey method stated. One hospital’s 2019 prompt-pay sheet listed $1,088 for a two-hour session.
Hard chamber, 2.0 ATA or more, cash$150 to $600; $250 to $350 typical in most metrosHyperbaricFinder (2026) and CostInsightHub (April 2026); the latter gives New York $400 to $550, Los Angeles and San Francisco $350 to $500, Houston and Dallas $180 to $300. Neither publishes its sample.
Soft chamber, 1.3 ATA, wellness studio$60 to $150Same two guides. A franchise promotion we found offered a $60 mild session; the national chain Restore sells 60 and 90 minute sessions without a public price or pressure.
Long program, clinic chain, 60 sessions at 2.0 ATA“starting at” $50,000Third-party directory figure for Aviv Clinics’ 12-week program, which runs the protocol in the Israeli trials; Aviv publishes no price and we could not confirm it.

Two things to read off that table. First, the cheap sessions are in the soft chambers, which deliver about a third more oxygen pressure than room air, and the expensive ones are in the hard chambers, which deliver ten times. You are not buying the same thing at $60 and at $400. Second, the clinical trials that found anything used 40 to 60 sessions at 2.0 atmospheres, which at the typical cash rate is $10,000 to $21,000 and at Medicare’s rate $24,000 to $40,000; that is the figure the home-chamber pitch is written against.

Is hyperbaric oxygen therapy covered by insurance?

For the conditions on the list, yes. Medicare’s national coverage determination 20.29 covers 15 conditions: acute carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression illness, gas embolism, gas gangrene, acute traumatic peripheral ischemia, crush injury and reattached limbs, necrotizing infections, acute peripheral arterial insufficiency, compromised skin grafts, chronic refractory osteomyelitis, osteoradionecrosis, soft-tissue radiation necrosis, cyanide poisoning, refractory actinomycosis, and diabetic lower-limb wounds of Wagner grade III or worse that have failed 30 days of standard care. A physician must supervise. Commercial plans track the same list, give or take.

For everything else, no. The same Medicare document names 22 non-covered uses, among them chronic brain syndrome, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, senility, thermal burns and sickle cell disease. Aetna’s policy lists traumatic brain injury, autism, cerebral palsy, stroke, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis and COVID-19 as experimental. We found no US insurer that covers a wellness session or a home chamber, and the cleared use of a soft chamber, acute mountain sickness, is not a condition a home buyer has.

HSA and FSA money follows the same logic: a Letter of Medical Necessity for a diagnosed condition, which is a clinician’s call and a claim the account holder answers for; our HSA and FSA guide explains what decides it and why we do not write that any device is eligible.

Home hyperbaric chamber cost, installed

Three builds, priced on 31 October 2026 with the circuit from our electrical guide and a dedicated 120 V 20 A circuit on every one, because the one maker that publishes its loads draws 12 to 13 A and a shared garage circuit is how a session ends early.

BuildChamberConcentratorCircuitTotal
Cleared, cheapestNewtowne A4-34, $5,795$1,575$450$7,820

Hard shell, 2.0 ATAOxyRevo Quest36, $29,999, concentrator includedincluded$450$30,449 plus freight to a slab

The $450 circuit is the midpoint of the $250 to $600 our electrical guide gives for a dedicated 120 V 20 A circuit in a typical metro; the Quest36 at 573 lb on four feet also wants a look at a wood-framed floor, which is a contractor’s half hour and not in the table. None of the three includes the clinician’s visit for the prescription the cleared chambers and the concentrator require.

What a session costs to run

Oxygen Health Systems is the one seller that prints its loads: a 520 W compressor, a 630 to 640 W concentrator and a 300 W dehumidifier, 1,460 W on its 32-inch system and 1,560 W on its vertical one. Summit to Sea lists a 15 A circuit and two compressors; OxyHealth a 1/3 hp compressor; nobody else a number. Taking 1.5 kW as the system load for a 90 minute session:

kWh a sessionIdaho, 11.4¢US metro, about 16¢California, 31.8¢
Compressor only, 1.3 ATA bag on air0.8$0.09$0.13$0.25
Compressor + concentrator + dehumidifier2.2$0.26$0.36$0.70
Five sessions a week, full system, a year572$65$92$182

The rates are the state average residential prices our calculators prefill; the number on your bill is the one that counts. Electricity is not where a chamber costs money. The unpublished costs are: the bladder’s service life, which no maker states; the concentrator’s sieve beds, which degrade with hours and are not priced on any chamber listing; and the fact that the two-year warranties on most of these do not transfer.

The break-even

Sessions at which owning costs less than renting, at the installed totals above and at three session prices. Read the caveat below before reading the table.

Installed costAt $100 a session (soft studio)At $300 (hard clinic, typical)At $596 (Medicare’s 2022 rate)
Newtowne A4-34 build, $7,82078 sessions2613
Summit to Sea Dive build, $12,020120 sessions4020
Quest36 build, $30,449304 sessions10151

At five sessions a week, 78 sessions is four months and 304 is just over a year. That is the pitch, and it is arithmetically true against the soft-studio column, which is the same device at the same pressure. The other two columns are false comparisons: a hard clinic session is 2.0 atmospheres on 100% oxygen, 1,473 mmHg of inspired oxygen pressure, and the two soft-chamber rows deliver 198 on air or about 282 with a mask. Only the Quest36 row reaches the clinic dose, at a price where the clinic wins for 100 sessions, with a technician outside and a pressure-vessel stamp the Quest36 does not claim. The one thing the table cannot price is whether any of these sessions does anything for you, which is the benefits guide’s subject, and the answer there is that the trials used the dose in the right-hand columns.

Used hyperbaric chambers for sale

Asking prices on 31 October 2026, not sales: on eBay, a pre-owned OxyHealth Vitaeris 320 at $8,500 and another at $12,500 or best offer, Newtowne Flexi-Lites at $4,000 and $5,000 with compressor and concentrator, a pre-owned Summit to Sea vertical at $2,999.99, an unbranded 1.5 atmosphere soft chamber at $4,999; on DOTmed, used Summit to Sea Dives at $6,500 and $7,000, an OxyHealth Quamvis 320 “used once” at $25,000, and clinical Sechrist monoplaces at $11,000 to $32,000. Against the new prices above that is roughly 35 to 60% for a soft chamber a few years old. eBay’s sold prices need a login and we did not read them; Facebook Marketplace likewise. A used bladder has a life nobody publishes and a warranty that does not transfer, and a used chamber still needs the concentrator, the circuit and, for the cleared ones, the prescription.

What we have not measured

Every price is a seller’s, every clinic rate a price guide’s or Medicare’s, and every kilowatt-hour a computation from one maker’s published watts. The one running-cost measurement that would make this page honest is a plug-in power meter on a whole soft-chamber system through a session, compressor, concentrator and dehumidifier together, at pressure, which would replace the 1.5 kW assumption with a reading and tell us whether the compressor cycles or runs flat out once the bag is up. A second is the concentrator’s output purity over its first few hundred hours, with a diver’s oxygen analyzer, which is the running cost the sieve beds hide. An afternoon and a few weeks respectively, n=1.

Where that leaves the money

If you have a covered condition, a hospital session costs you your coinsurance and the chamber is the right one. If you want a 2.0 atmosphere course for an off-label reason, the clinic’s cash rate for 40 sessions is $10,000 to $21,000 at the guides’ typical prices, and no home chamber under $30,000 delivers that dose. If you want a soft chamber for the experience of one, the studios sell it at $60 to $150 a session and the home chamber guide says which bags are cleared and what they need from your house; owning beats the studio after about 80 to 120 sessions. Our how we test page says what every figure here is and is not.

Questions buyers actually ask

How much does hyperbaric oxygen therapy cost per session?

It depends on the chamber and who is paying. Medicare's allowed amount for a covered hospital session was about $596 in 2022, from the published facility and physician rates, and about $658 in 2025 for a session of 106 to 135 minutes. Cash prices at wellness clinics, from 2026 price guides that do not publish their survey method, run $60 to $150 for a soft 1.3 atmosphere chamber and $150 to $600 for a hard 2.0 atmosphere one, with $250 to $350 typical in most metros. A full course of 40 sessions at those rates is $2,400 to $24,000.

How much is a hyperbaric chamber to buy?

On 31 October 2026, from the sellers' pages: $4,095 to $8,995 for Newtowne's cleared soft chambers on sale, $7,995 to $21,995 for Summit to Sea's, $6,729 to $14,500 for Oxygen Health Systems, $9,900 to $29,900 for OxyHealth's soft chambers at its dealer, $28,999 to $29,999 for an OxyRevo hard shell at 1.5 or 2.0 atmospheres, and $136,100 for OxyHealth's hard Fortius 420. A 10 litre oxygen concentrator is $1,550 to $1,575 more on the soft chambers that do not include one.

Is hyperbaric oxygen therapy covered by insurance?

For the conditions on Medicare's national coverage determination, 15 of them including carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression illness, gas gangrene, crush injury, refractory osteomyelitis, radiation injury and diabetic foot wounds that have failed standard care, yes, with a physician supervising. For everything else, no: Medicare lists 22 non-covered uses by name, and Aetna's policy calls traumatic brain injury, autism, stroke, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis and COVID-19 experimental. No US insurer we found covers wellness or off-label sessions, and none covers a home chamber.

How much does a home hyperbaric chamber cost to run?

Little. The one maker that publishes its loads lists a 520 W compressor, a 630 to 640 W concentrator and a 300 W dehumidifier, about 1.5 kW together, so a 90 minute session is about 2.2 kWh: 26 cents in Idaho and 70 cents in California at the state average residential rates. Five sessions a week is $70 to $180 a year. The costs the makers do not publish are the ones that matter more: the life of the bladder, the concentrator's sieve beds, and the extended warranty the dealers sell at $1,000 to $2,000.

How many sessions until a home chamber pays for itself?

Against a $100 soft-chamber studio session, the cheapest cleared home chamber with a concentrator, about $5,670, pays back in 57 sessions, and a $9,995 Summit to Sea Dive with a concentrator in about 116. Against a $300 hard-chamber clinic session the counts are 19 and 39, but that comparison is false: the clinic session is 2.0 atmospheres on 100% oxygen and the home bag is 1.3 atmospheres on air with a mask, which is a different dose by a factor of about seven in inspired oxygen pressure.

Can you use an HSA or FSA for a hyperbaric chamber?

Only with a Letter of Medical Necessity for a diagnosed condition, and a chamber cleared for acute mountain sickness bought for anything else is the kind of claim that gets disallowed. Our HSA and FSA guide explains what decides eligibility; nothing on this page is tax advice.
